DescriptionIf you are excited and motivated to contribute to this world changing scientific effort we invite you to apply for a position as a skilled Senior Database Administrator to join our team. You will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our databases, including maintenance, upgrades, monitoring, and performance tuning. In addition, you will be responsible for designing growth strategies for our database infrastructure as they approach multi-PB sizes, ensuring that they can handle the increasing scientific challenges at scale and architect robust upgrade and migration strategies that ensure continual operation for our science users. You will be working closely with our Infrastructure, Applications and Data Management teams as well as science groups to determine their needs.
Your specific responsibilities include:
Manage and maintain our PostgreSQL and MySQL databases, ensuring high availability and reliability on our in-house kubernetes platform.
Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as reindexing, backups, patching, and software upgrades.
Monitor the performance and health of our databases, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
Design and implement growth strategies for our databases, ensuring they can handle our organization's increasing (meta)data needs.
Collaborate with software developers and other scientific computing staff to optimize database performance and support application development.
Develop and implement security measures to protect our databases from unauthorized access or data breaches.
Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and best practices.
Participate in on-call rotations as needed.

RequirementsTo be successful in this position you will bring:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field and at least 8 years of experience as a Database Administrator; or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Expert knowledge of PostgreSQL and MySQL.
Extensive experience with database design, performance tuning, and optimization.
Experience with database security best practices.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proven ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with running databases on Kubernetes
Experience with distributed databases
Experience with NoSQL databases such as Mongo and Cassandra
Experience with message bus technologies such as Kafka and ZeroMQ
Experience with logical replication and other high availability database technologies
Experience in the DoE lab complex and or scientific/academic environment

The Scientific Computing Services group supports SLAC's broad and vibrant scientific program in fundamental physics, with research in cosmic survey science, cosmic microwave background, direct dark matter searches, proton collider physics and neutrino physics, as well as theoretical and computational physics. We host the US Data Facility for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, providing unprecedented scale and time resolution of celestial objects; and we also support the data systems for the Linear Coherent Light Source providing ultra high resolution imaging - pushing the boundaries of biological and material science.
