Joel D. Brock
Biography
Joel Brock is the Given Foundation Professor of Engineering at Cornell University's School of Applied and Engineering Physics and directs the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). He has a B.S. in Physics from Stanford and a Ph.D. from M.I.T.. Brock's early career was distinguished with an NSF Young Investigator Award. Brock has served as the Director of Graduate Studies for Applied Physics and led the School of Applied & Engineering Physics. Since 2012, he is at the helm of CHESS. His advisory roles extend internationally, including committees in Japan, Taiwan, and the USA.

Brock is involved with multiple research centers at Cornell and is an American Physical Society Fellow. His research focuses on capturing and understanding the fleeting structures in condensed matter, employing cutting-edge synchrotron-based x-ray techniques to investigate materials' structural dynamics during phase changes, chemical reactions, and other rapid transformations over an expansive range of scales and timeframes.
