Biography
Omar Ghattas is a professor of mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and holds the Cockrell Chair in Engineering. He is also the director of the OPTIMUS (Optimization, Inversion, Machine Learning, and Uncertainty for Complex Systems) Center in the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences. His research focuses on advanced mathematical, computational, and statistical theory and algorithms for large-scale inverse and optimization problems governed by PDEs. He is a two-time co-recipient of the ACM Gordon Bell Prize (2003 and 2015) and a multi-year finalist (2008, 2010, 2012). He received the 2019 SIAM CSE Best Paper Prize and the 2019 SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences Career Prize. He is a Fellow of SIAM and serves on the National Academies Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics. He holds BSE (civil and environmental engineering) and MS and PhD (computational mechanics) degrees from Duke University.
