SUMMARY:Using Containers to Accelerate HPC
DESCRIPTION:Richard Canon (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL));
Eduardo Arango Gutierrez (NVIDIA Corporation, Deep Learning Institute); Sa
meer Shende (University of Oregon; ParaTools, Inc.); Mehaboob Basha Nagthe
Basapur (Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre); and Andrew Younge (Sandi
a National Laboratories)\n\nThe use of containers has revolutionized the w
ay in which industries and enterprises have developed and deployed computa
tional software and distributed systems. This containerization model has g
ained traction within the HPC community as well, with the promise of impro
ved reliability, reproducibility, portability, and levels of customization
that were not previously possible on supercomputers. This adoption has be
en enabled by a number of HPC Container runtimes that have emerged includi
ng Singularity, Shifter, Sarus, Podman and others.\nThis hands-on tutorial
looks to train users on the use of containers for HPC use-cases. We will
provide a detailed background on Linux containers, along with an introduct
ory hands-on experience building a container image, sharing the container
and running it on an HPC cluster. Furthermore, the tutorial will provide m
ore advanced information on how to run MPI-based and GPU-enabled HPC appli
cations, how to optimize I/O intensive workflows, and how to setup GUI- en
abled interactive sessions. Cutting-edge examples will include machine lea
rning and bioinformatics. Users will leave the tutorial with a solid found
ational understanding of how to utilize containers on HPC resources using
Podman, Shifter and Singularity, and in-depth knowledge to deploy custom c
ontainers on their own resources.\n\nTag: Artificial Intelligence/Machine
