SUMMARY:SciStream: Enabling Data Streaming Between Science Instruments and
  HPC Nodes
DESCRIPTION:Rajkumar Kettimuthu (Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)); Joaqu
in Chung (University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)); and F
lavio Castro (Argonne National Laboratory (ANL))\n\nMemory-to-memory data
streaming between scientific instruments and remote high-performance compu
ting (HPC) nodes has emerged as a key requirement to enable online process
ing of high-volume and high-velocity data for feature detection, experimen
t steering, and other purposes. In contrast to file transfer between scien
tific facilities for which a well-defined architecture exists in the form
of science DMZ, data transfer nodes (DTN) and the associated tools, there
is no well-defined infrastructure to enable efficient and secure memory-to
-memory data streaming between scientific instruments and HPC nodes. It is
especially important as both scientific instruments and HPC nodes lack di
rect external network connectivity. SciStream establishes a well-defined a
rchitecture and control protocols with an open-source implementation to en
able distributed scientific workflows to use their choice of data streamin
g tools to move data from scientific instruments’ memory to HPC nodes’ mem
ory. In this tutorial, we will start with motivating the need for SciStrea
m, describe the architecture and protocols that it uses to establish authe
nticated and transparent connections between producers and consumers; disc
uss design considerations, our implementation approach and evaluation resu
lts. We will show a live demo of SciStream followed by hands-on exercises.
We will also discuss our experience integrating and running real-world sc
ientific applications with SciStream.\n\nTag: Applications and Application
