SUMMARY:Hilbert's Problems for HPC
DESCRIPTION:Rich Vuduc (Georgia Institute of Technology), Charles Leiserso
n (Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)), Gabriel Loh (AMD Research
), George Karypis (University of Minnesota), Mary Hall (University of Utah
), and Omar Ghattas (The University of Texas at Austin)\n\nThis panel spec
ulates on open problems that can, should, or will (if the panelists are su
fficiently brave!) set an agenda for HPC research over the next 50 years.
The panel's concept is inspired by David Hilbert's 23 problems, several of
which came to define 20th-century mathematical research. Panelists will p
ropose, discuss, and debate what such a "problem set" for HPC in the 21st
century could be, extrapolating from various contemporary issues, includin
g the end of Moore's Law, the dominance of AI, what programs and programmi
ng are and will be, and the continued pervasiveness of computing in the fa
bric of modern science and engineering. The panelists are highly respected
academic researchers, including those with industrial experience and thos
e who, quite literally, wrote "the" textbooks on various aspects of parall
 el and high-performance computing.\n\nTag: Algorithms, Open Problems\n\nRe

g Pass, Exhibits Reg Pass\n\nSession Chair: Richard Vuduc (Georgia Institu
