SUMMARY:Characterizing the Performance of the GENE-X Code for Gyrokinetic
 Turbulence Simulations
DESCRIPTION:Jordy Trilaksono (Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Tok
amak Theory Division); Jeremy Johnathan Williams (KTH Royal Institute of T
echnology); Philipp Ulbl (Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Tokamak
Theory Division); Tilman Dannert and Erwin Laure (Max Planck Computing an
d Data Facility); Stefano Markidis (KTH Royal Institute of Technology); an
d Frank Jenko (Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Tokamak Theory Div
ision)\n\nSimulating plasma turbulence in the edge region of a magnetic co
nfinement fusion (MCF) device is crucial for identifying optimal operation
al scenarios for future fusion energy commercialization. GENE-X, an Euleri
an electromagnetic gyrokinetic code, can simulate plasma turbulence throug
hout an MCF device, including the edge region. This work focuses on charac
terizing GENE-X's performance, such as the elapsed time during the time in
tegration phase, memory usage, and file I/O. Two cases with different MPI
decomposition schemes are analyzed using GENE-X's built-in profiler, along
with profiling and monitoring tools such as IPM and Darshan. This study a
ims to provide a preliminary view of the HPC characteristics of the code t
o assist in future optimization efforts.\n\nRegistration Category: Tech Pr
ogram Reg Pass, Exhibits Reg Pass\n\nSession Chairs: Ayesha Afzal (Friedri
ch-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg; Erlangen National High Perfor
mance Computing Center); Sally Ellingson (University of Kentucky); and Ala
 n Sussman (University of Maryland)\n\n
