SUMMARY:Inclusivity Programming: Leveraging Engagement and Advocacy Practi
ces for Effective Participation by Underrepresented Groups in STEM
DESCRIPTION:Jean Sexton (ESnet; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBN
L)), Paige Kinsley (Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)), Charles Lively III
(ESnet; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)), Dhruva Chakravorty
(Texas A&M University), and Karla Morris (Sandia National Laboratories)\n
\nUnderrepresentation in the STEM fields may lead to missing the voices an
d perspectives of many brilliant people (whether through never entering th
e field, prematurely leaving a STEM career, or other factors which discour
age active participation). Moreover, many barriers exist that may inhibit
people from underrepresented groups who are in STEM careers from realizing
their full potential. The combination of these factors implies a lot of m
issed opportunities for more creative and productive teams and for more in
novative solutions to critical problems we face in this world. In this pan
el, panelists will address questions relevant to their experiences, best p
ractices, and outcomes from engaging in efforts to broaden participation f
rom different communities and groups. These efforts range across a variety
of settings and impact diverse communities. The panelists will discuss wa
ys to get involved with service and outreach work at their institutions, a
bout how to promote a culture of belonging, and about how such efforts ben
efit the work environment for everyone.\n\nTag: Inclusivity\n\nRegistratio
