SUMMARY:Visualization of a CM1 Cloud Simulation
DESCRIPTION:Matt Rehme, Hugh Morrison, and Kamal Kant Chandrakar (National
Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR))\n\nThe simulation data was genera
 ted from a three-hour simulation at 7.5 m grid-spacing (domain size of 10
km x 10 km x 8 km) of a precipitating cumulus congestus cloud using Cloud
Model 1 (CM1) with Lagrangian microphysics on NSF NCAR's Derecho supercomp
uter. Model output, in the form of NetCDF files, was converted to OpenVDB
volume files, which were then read directly into Blender 3D animation soft
ware.\n\nMaterials, lighting, and camera motion for the pan/zoom sequence
were all applied in Blender. The animation was rendered on an NVIDIA GPU u
sing NVIDIA OptiX via the Blender Cycles rendering engine. The Derecho sup
ercomputer model was also rendered in Blender from a textured mesh. Post-p
roduction, including adding text and logos, was performed in Adobe Premier
e.\n\nRegistration Category: Tech Program Reg Pass, Workshop Reg Pass, Tut
orial Reg Pass, Exhibits Reg Pass\n\n
