SUMMARY:PPP: Sharing the Pain of Parallel Programming
DESCRIPTION:Tom Vander Aa (ExaScience Lab at Imec); Antonio Peña (Barcelon
a Supercomputing Center (BSC); Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC),
Spain); Robert Lucas (ANSYS); and Roel Wuyts (Interuniversity Microelectr
onics Centre (IMEC), Belgium; KU Leuven, Belgium)\n\nWriting good parallel
programs is painful. Very painful. \n\nThis is because high-performance c
ompute systems have evolved from simple single-core machines, strung toget
her with Ethernet, into multi-core, multi-accelerator, multi-level monster
 s. As a consequence, programming such systems means dealing with synchroni
zation and communication overhead, load imbalance, a multitude of programm
ing models and languages.\n\nIn this BoF we bring together application peo
ple to share their pain in programming parallel systems, with people worki
ng on programming frameworks and models. We hope this can lead to insights
and solutions to alleviate the pain.\n\nRegistration Category: Tech Progr
am Reg Pass, Exhibits Reg Pass\n\n
