SUMMARY:Toward Integrating LLMs in HPC Software Development
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Nichols and Abhinav Bhatele (University of Maryland); W
illiam Godoy (Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)); Arjun Guha (Northeast
ern University, Khoury College of Computer Sciences); Harshitha Menon and
Konstantinos Parasyris (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)); an
d Pedro Valero-Lara (Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL))\n\nLarge Langua
ge Model (LLM) based coding assistants have already proven to be useful to
ols for aiding software developers. Adapting these tools in HPC software d
evelopment will greatly improve the quality and time-to-development of sci
entific codes. This will create an environment where researchers can devot
e more attention to scientific challenges and less to software development
intricacies, driving scientific progress forward. However, LLM-based tool
s can be difficult to use and present many dangers in the form of over-rel
iance, inaccuracies, and intellectual property. This BoF provides a place
for the community to discuss the use of LLMs for HPC software development.
