SUMMARY:XaaS: Acceleration as a Service to Enable Productive High-Performa
 nce Cloud Computing
DESCRIPTION:Marcin Copik and Torsten Hoefler (ETH Zürich), Thomas Schulthe
ss (Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS)), Dan Ernst (NVIDIA Corpor
ation), and Ian Foster (Argonne National Laboratory)\n\nHPC and cloud comp
uting have historically evolved independently, each specializing in perfor
mance or productivity. But what if we could combine the best of both world
s? The recently proposed Acceleration as a Service (XaaS) presented a new
vision for the future — a unified architecture providing transparent acces
s to high-performance computing resources across any underlying cloud or H
PC provider. By bridging advancements from both domains with performance-p
ortable containers, XaaS opens up new research directions: How can XaaS en
able the seamless execution of scientific software across many systems and
architectures? How much will XaaS have to change containers to achieve pe
rformance portability between different HPC systems? What new serverless a
nd flexible resource utilization models could XaaS enable?\n\nJoin our pan
el, where the authors of the XaaS proposal will explore these questions an
d discuss the potential of cloud technologies to change the HPC landscape.
