SUMMARY:Integrating Captive Portal Technology into Computer Science Educat
ion: A Modular, Hands-On Approach to Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Lianting Wang and Marcelo Ponce (University of Toronto Scarbor
ough; University of Toronto Scarborough, Department of Computer and Mathem
atical Sciences)\n\nA Captive Portal (CP) represents an interface for netw
ork connectivity where access to specific resources is restricted until ce
rtain conditions are satisfied. It represents a light-weighted sort of aut
hentication mechanism where triggering requirements are displayed, typical
ly in a web page-type interface, e.g. reading advertisements, accepting us
age policies, or providing some form of credentials. Some HPC systems use
this approach to validate users and grant access to resources (e.g. gatewa
ys to specialized portals, system policies disclosures, etc.).\n\nIn this
work, we present an educational project aimed to introduce the technology
behind CP infrastructures. For this, we developed a series of modules to e
mphasize each of the different aspects and features of this technology. Th
e project is based on an open-source implementation widely used in compute
r network courses, making it well-suited for instructors and practitioners
in this field.\n\nTag: Distributed Computing, Education, Emerging Technol
ogies\n\nRegistration Category: Workshop Reg Pass\n\nSession Chairs: Nia A
lexandrov (Hartree Centre); Scott Lathrop (University of Illinois Urbana-C
hampaign); Julie Mullen (Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Linc
oln Laboratory); and Nitin Sukhija (Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvan
 ia)\n\n
