SUMMARY:Enhancing HPC Education through Virtual Cluster Administration and
  Benchmarking
DESCRIPTION:Charles Lindsey, Jeffrey Valdez, Aaron Jezghani, Will Powell,
and Rich Vuduc (Georgia Institute of Technology)\n\nThe rapid advancement
in high-performance computing (HPC) poses significant challenges for the H
PC community. Current HPC training approaches are often too generic or too
customized to local environments, limiting their applicability and impact
. Often, these shortcomings are due to the limited accessibility, excessiv
e cost, and specialized support necessary to provide HPC environments for
teaching. To address these challenges, we introduce HPC Virtual Cluster, a
hardware-agnostic platform designed to provide an easy-to-configure, gene
ralizable, and scalable approach to HPC system management for training and
education in computational research alongside production system configura
tions. We implemented this platform in a virtually integrated project (VIP
) course aimed at training undergraduates for HPC cluster building. Drawin
g from our experience from the VIP course, we advocate for the integration
of more comprehensive educational and training approaches, such as HPC Vi
rtual Cluster, to better support HPC.\n\nTag: Distributed Computing, Educa
tion, Emerging Technologies\n\nRegistration Category: Workshop Reg Pass\n\
nSession Chairs: Nia Alexandrov (Hartree Centre); Scott Lathrop (Universit
y of Illinois Urbana-Champaign); Julie Mullen (Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT), Lincoln Laboratory); and Nitin Sukhija (Slippery Rock Un
 iversity of Pennsylvania)\n\n
